I posit, as my initial thesis, that Spanish literature has not been receptive in general to the autobiographical form. There exists, however, a pool of twentieth-century literary and visual texts that bring to the fore what, redefining Lejeune's terminology, I call the autobiographical medium. Mi essay engages in a hermeneutical analysis of those central texts. I give special attention to Unamuno since I consider him a primordial author in regards to his exposition of his own self via several textual alter egos. Paz en la guerra is the chosen text that I use to verify my thesis. I study Cernuda and Juan Goytisolo as exemplary cases of the unmasking of the alibis of the prevailing cultural code. In them, as well as in Almodóvars La mala educación the absolute revelation of a personal unconventional sexuality becomes a powerful instrument for the criticism of a stifling educational normative. I conclude with an analysis of the various configurations of the authorial self in Javier Cercass La velocidad de la luz.
