The comparative study of the punctuation among the three authorized editions of Guzmán de Alfarache, under the supervision of the author (Madrid 1599, Madrid 1600 and Sevilla 1602), shows that Mateo Alemán looked after of the orthography of the text accurately and that he corrected the three versions personally. The perusal of the pirate edition (Madrid, 1601) allows us to check that the coincidences with the 1600 and the 1602 editions are numerous but it is far from the princeps; at the same time, it anticipates modifications that will be introduced in the Seville edition. We can conclude that the edition of 1601 reproduces a copy of the one of Madrid 1600, corrected by Mateo Alemán 's own hand.
