In this article we analyze the construction of the Mictlan presented in Andrés de Olmos' Tratado sobre los siete pecados mortales (1553). In this study, we explain how Olmos uses both elements of the Christian Hell and the underworld Mexica in order to create a frightening space for indigenous people in New Spain. In particular, we focus in those aspects that highlight corporal torture in this space elaborated by Olmos: the fall and verticality of Mictlan, the jail, strangulation and captivity, the dirtiness, and the torturers. We conclude that Olmos establishes a relationship between the normative and the sensorial in his description of the Mictlan in order to produce a rhetoric effect in his audience
