What books were read by the Greeks in the 18th century? How were they read? Who were the instrumental agents of the Greek book? How did the books circulate? Who published them, where and for whom? What role did translation play in the transmission and spreading of enlightened and liberal ideas? Is the reading of enlightened books related to the formation of the Greek national conscience and identity? What is the connection between books and the causes of the 1821 Greek Revolution? Does the study of the world of books help us to understand more fully how the society in which they circulated functioned? This article proposes considering some of the aspects raised by these interrogatives.
