From the ninth century onward, we find in Byzantium a series of statements on the nature of Platonic Ideas which comes to be a pioneer philosophical effort in respect of the Latin medieval controversy on universals. Byzantines sistematically vindicate a "realistic conceptualism" which is opposed to both the "realism" of Plato and to the "nominalism" of Antisthenes. As a consequence of this, they get the Ancient Medioplatonic and Patristic exemplarism rebuked, even when it had survived cuiusque genere inside the Middle Platonism and the Patristic thought.
