This article offers a rhetorical analysis of the storm and shipwreck fragment of Bergadis' Apokopos. It relates it to marine sym bology, metaphor and allegory and their use in traditional oratory, and to the moral evaluation of the sea in the Middle Ages. It also considers the thematic-structural parallelism between the fragment and the poem's prologue-introduction. Thus, the article aims to articulate an interpretative framework of the work within the didactic and moral assumptions of the late medieval reformist movement which stressed the notion of sudden death as a means of stirring moral conscience. The story would be used in the work with a pedagogic and dissuasive function, as was common in the 15th century, when the motif of ships with type-characters who embark on a symbolic voyage in search of their destiny or personal truth -usually the other world- became fashionable.
