Despite the fact that the Greek community of Egypt was the craddle of two of the most prestigious Modern Greek writers -C. P. Cavafy and Stratis Tsirkas-, it has not, so far, been sufficiently studied. The present work is an approach not so much to its history as to its specific social and cultural profile. Following the footsteps of the two writers, it has emerged from an interest in the complexity of such notions as community, foreignness, cosmopolitanism, multiculturalism and ethnic identity, and it is informed by two interrelated questions: whether the community's decline and disappearance could have been avoided, and the role played by the strong feeling of ethnicity that determined its profile. With the aim of approaching these questions and making manifest the Greek community's specificity, this work highlights the interraction of both external factors -Egypt's position in the capitalist world economy, the system of capitulations, British colonial presence and a growing Egyptian nacionalist movement- and internal -its relations with the rest of Egypt's foreign communities, its social and class structure, its ideological and cultural premises, its political options, and the processes of ethnic cohesion to which it was subjected-.
