The present study examines the phenomenon of naming using ancient Greek names in the island of Samos. The discussion is developed within the framework of other similar cases in Greek areas occupied by the Ottomans during the second half of the 19th century. This naming phenomenon is related to the formation of the collective national consciousness and the dominating tendencies for liberation from the foreign occupation in Samos during the aforementioned period of time. It is examined as an important manifestation of the local folk ideology that led to the revolution of the Samians in 1912 against the hegemony of the status quo that had been imposed in Samos since 1834 and to the incorporation of the island to the free Greek state.
