This article presents one of theapproaches of multimodal discourse analysis(O'Halloran, 2014), on the basis of thepresence of jewelry adorning the femalebody in two literary works sharing thesame title, although belonging to two verydifferent historical contexts. The first workwas written by the Jain Prince Ilango Adigaltowards the second century AD, and itis inspired by the splendid surroundings ofSouthern India. The second work was writtenby the Spanish poet Gustavo AdolfoBécquer in 1861, and it tells the love storyof two young people in the city of Toledo. The function of the jewels and their visualdesign in Las ajorcas de oro are studied as acomparative semiotic analysis of ornamentalsamples.
