    In this article, we examine the causes that made El español Gerardo an example of the baroque experimentation, thanks specially to the powerful influence of the Byzantine genre. An influence that spinned around the commentary of Saint Augustine about the biblical figure of the pilgrim, archetype convenientely molded in this genre in the XVIIth Century, as well as his interpretation of the role of the Divine Providence, as stated in the City of God
