"The Emperor's New Clothes" (1837) by Hans Christian Andersen, has agreat similarity to one of the narratives of the Spanish writer Don Juan Manuel, author of Elconde Lucanor, written between 1330 and 1335. Several scholars have described thesimilarities, but none has pointed out a clear textual relationship. It has been said that theDanish text borrows "inspiration" from the Hispanic narrative, but this explanation is vaguefor literary theory. This study examines the link between the two stories by making use ofthe theory of transtextuality by Gérard Genette.
