In the 17th century, the depiction of Spain in Europe is influenced by France by means such as the travel book. This genre's tendency towards fiction has often been emphasized, although reminiscences of Spanish Golden Age theatre in these texts have not been duly highlighted. With this premise, this article attempts to display the implications of this fantastic characterization of the Spanish way of life in the future reception of Spanish literature in Germany. To do so, it explores several critical testimonies from the 17th and 18th century that convey the aforesaid characterization. From the identification of everything Spanish with Schwärmerei to the interpretation that romantics would later give to the poetic nature of the Spanish language, it is possible to discern a firm unifying thread that always back to the same source
