The comedy La Aldegüela, attributed to Lope de Vega and partially based on historical facts, presents a very interesting female character, the miller María: after drawing a portrait of her and her loves with the Duke -image of the Grand Duke of Alba, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo (1507-1582)-, the study focuses on the analysis of the dramatic construction of her figure as mother of Fernando, born from her youthful relationship, behind which hides the illegitimate and homonymous son of the Grand Duke, Ferdinand (or Hernando) (1527-1592). Furthermore, it is highlighted the role played by Mary as the material and moral guardian of her son, whose instinctively haughty attitude is opposed to the environment of the village in which they live. Thanks to the mother's constant support and his innate military qualities, Fernando manages to be publicly recognized by his father and be elected Gran Prior de Castilla
