This article explores the probable literary sources of El esclavo de su esclavo by Mariana de Carvajal, and how they participate in the construction of meaning within the text. Going beyond the identification of the Abencerraje, I try to contextualize its influence as well as to analyze other compositional elements of this short novel. The analysis focuses on the morisco theme and its role to develop an exemplary narrative about masculinity and masculine virtues (especially loyalty) in the context of the Baroque short novel
