The objective of the present paper is to study an Arab tale that probably is in the genesis of the Spanish proverb «Estar esperando a que caiga la breva» (Waiting for the Fig to Fall»), which announces the laziness of its main character. Throughout these pages, we will connect this story with numerous examples -both written and oral- of a tale where several lazy men are waiting for a fig to fall in their mouths. This tale arrived in France from Algeria in the second half of the 19th century, from where it made its entry in Spain. The versions and variants that we have collected will allows us to prove its dispersion either orally or written in both European countries, as well as in several countries in the Arab world, where it is linked with different sayings. Finally, we will study the relationship of this story with the tale type ATU 1950 and we will propose the storyline of a probable new type of folklore.
