Isabella Bird and Frances Trollope travelled through North America at a time of great fascination for this new nation felt by the British. During their lifetime, they were both considered illustrious travelers, and their travelogues were popular among a wide readership. Today, their texts are considered part of the literary canon of travel writing. However, their established status should not belie the fact that, like many women travel writers of the nineteenth century, Bird and Trollope used literary strategies that helped make their travel writings acceptable in a society which was not inclined to accept women as cultural authorities.
