The paper analyses the social critic made by the Chilean Maipina de la Barra (1834-1904) in her travel memoir about the Argentinean women. It also inquires its discursive strategies. Our main purpose is to understand the ways by which the author made such critic; for instance, the "reality effect", used to reinforced her ideas. The paper studies the ideological perspectives of de la Barra, which tried to achieve a more active role of the women inside the Latin American bourgeoisie and its enlightened project. Thus, the travel memory written by de la Barra used different travel images in order to question a society hostile to women.
