La pérdida de don Beltrán is one of the most iconic romances (traditional Spanish ballads) of the Carolingian cycle. It has been associated with an episode of the Battle of Roncevaux and is possibly derived from a chanson de geste circulating in oral tradition. It tells the story of an veteran solider that returns to the battlefield in search of his son's body. The ballad was very popular during the 16th and the 17th centuries, transmitted orally and in manuscript and print sources. Moreover, many writers of that time made adaptations of or allusions to the ballad. The main purpose of this article is to analyse the presence and influence of this traditional ballad, La pérdida de don Beltrán, in Spanish Literature of the Golden Age. The first part of the article studies the old versions of the romance, mostly preserved thanks to musical adaptations and glosses of the 16th century. The second part analyses the literary adaptations and parodies of the ballad. The third part of the article presents a comprehensive study of the quotations from and allusions to the ballad included in literary works of the 16th and 17th centuries. This survey of the ballad's reception and adaptations will demonstrate the popularity of La pérdida de don Beltrán during the Spanish Golden Age.
