This collaboration aims to disclaim one of the most persistent commonplaces concerning Benito Pérez Galdós: his anticlericalism. Through the study of his theological postulates and their application in the construction of the character of clergyman don Nazario Zahirín, protagonist of his novel Nazarín (1895), we show that don Benito is not dogmatically anticlerical, but his heterodoxy, as to the imposition of Christian doctrine by the Catholic Church on its worshippers, and his discrepancies about the ministerial exercise by presbyters, are more than justified. Thank to the contrastive analysis between the fictional narrative and the foundations of "liberation theology", we show that Don Benito can be considered a forerunner of this theological current that emerged in the 1960s.
