    Annotation:

Las obras del famoso poeta Juan de Mena edited by Francisco Sánchez de las Brozas (1582), offers a critical text with commentary on Mena's most classicist poems, the Coronación and the Laberinto. This commentary follows the late-fifteenth-century standard of selective annotation, and is addressed to students or to curious readers, rather than to erudite readers. The glosses are chiefly concerned with explanatory exegesis of the text and sources of the text. Less attention is paid to poetic analysis, and some attention is paid to textual criticism. To edit the text, El Brocense does not examine the manuscript tradition, but selects variants from the different reprints of the Laberinto annotated by Hernán Núñez and other editions of Mena in the sixteenth century, which he adopts as textus receptus. Then, beyond emendations ope codicum, his method is based more on conjectures guided by grammatical and poetic ratio. The smaller proportion of textual notes to Mena (and also to Classical and neo-Latin authors) in comparison to Garcilaso's poetry may be explained by the latter work -unique in El Brocense's output in its analysis of variants- being the beneficiary of a manuscript tradition exceptionally accessible to him.
