Fernando de Herrera is one of the main literary figures of the 16th century and, in addition to being an exegete of Garcilaso in his famous Anotaciones, he was also an important poet of the Petrarchan school. However, a not inconsiderable part of his production is composed of octosyllabic verses. This octosyllabic corpus consists of 26 poems in the 'cancioneril' style and did not enter into the printed tradition of Fernando de Herrera's poetry. In fact it is transmitted by a handwritten songbook from the seventeenth century (MS 57-5-5 olim 83-5-13 of the Biblioteca Colombina of Seville) that contains an anthology of several authors compiled by the Sevillian scholar José Maldonado Dávila and by another later testimony of the same songbook (MS 10293 of the BNE). The texts also appeared in José María Asensio's edition of the Controversia sobre las Anotaciones a la obra de Garcilaso (Seville, 1870) and were edited subsequently by José Manuel Blecua (1975) and Cristóbal Cuevas (1985). This article focuses especially on a text characterized by the quotation of famous verses of 15th century poets (Alfonso Álvarez de Villasandino, Jorge Manrique, Garci Sánchez de Badajoz, among others) where we note the playful nature of Herrera's poetry, and a witness to a literary memory neither extinguished nor forgotten. The article also contains a critical edition of the poem with an important emendation that concerns the sequence of the couplets.
