Through Celia, Elena Fortúns charac-ter, we are able to explore the aspi-rations and frustrations of Spanish women during the II Republic and the postwar period. This is so because Celia grew up and became an adult in the texts her creator wrote through-out more than two decades. As op-posed to Francoist, Celia, the charac-ters modernity lies in proposing, within the conservative area of chil-drens literature, a model of feminity that questions patriarchal authority.
