This paper intends to determinate the Locke's contribution for the modem problem mind-body in its initial phases. In Locke that issue starts from the empirical investigation on the substance and its repercussion in the topic of the personal identity, what is considered to be provided by the consciousness. We check what this consideration means, the problems it runs up against and the functions it accomplishes in the Locke's thought as a whole, emphasizing its nonsubstantial approach about that issue.
