The literature on what has been called professionalism is extensive, including narratives on the breaching of those values that guide the practice of medicine. Expectations for professional behaviour must be high, but there should also be an understanding of the failure to meet those expectations. The healing process should include the identification by the professional of the harm that he or she has done to others (accounting for your actions) and a genuine repentance which leads to the possibility of forgiveness - forgiveness, not in a religious sense - but in the social context of interaction between those who have caused harm and those who have been harmed. The challenge to academic institutions is to include in their curricula the development of attitudes and professional values.
