To talk about the use of the present with a past value focuses the attention on the equivalence of the present form with a simple past and is given the label historic present. However, the use of the present to refer to events in the past is not limited to the so called historic present: we find it in other cases. Moreover, not only does the present incorporate such a value: it also affects other forms in temporal correlation. On the other hand, the present with reference to past events is not only equivalent to a simple past, the main form used in the narration of past or historic events. It is also capable of expressing different significant variants presenting in some of them the impossibility of alternating with the simple past and expressing actions which never happened, as is seen in unreal conditional structures and in independent structures contextualised by certain adverbs or adverbial expressions.
