Kleist's work contains images and plots which challenge the commonly held idea that his work belongs to the period between Classicism and Romanticism. This belief does not do justice to the central debate in which he participated: that is, between the traditional perspective of the world of the Ancien Régime and the new ideas spread by the Jacobins of the French Revolution. The images to be found in Michael Kohlhaas and The Earthquake in Chile are evidence of the influence of Jacobin ideas.
