Gradualidad y gramaticalización en el estudio del complemento preposicional

Recently theoretical notions such as gradation and grammaticalization have been used in the study of spanish morphosyntax. In this article, we deal with the so-called prepositional complement (CP) from a theoretical point of view. We consider a need to take account of the paradigmatic and the syntagmatic axes for studying the grammatical relations in Spanish. On these axes gradation and grammaticalization work. The latter, regarding the prototypical preposition. The first, regarding the relation of CP with its governing verb. We use as example the esforzarse CPs and propose the need of studyng the syntactic functions in Spanish, at the same time, as position �paradigmatic axe� and as relations �syntagmatic axe�. So doing, we think gradation will become a truly linguistic tool.
