The study of two sermons by the novelist Francisco de Quintana offers the opportunity both to analyze the characteristics of the seventeenth century funeral oratory and to determine the points of contact with the dramatic models and the golden age poetry. The sermons that the preacher pronounced for the deaths of his friends Lope de Vega and Pérez de Montalban are compared. The two oraciones mixtas show the same dispositio, the research for llaneza style and a general preference for the classic artes predicandi. A considerable doctrinal part is joined to the idealized portrait of the dead (Lope as a representation of the saint, Montalbán as the young man seduced by human vanitas). The prominence of one of the three parameters set by classical rhetoric (the docere in Lopes oration, the movere in the Montalbáns one) determines, however, the difference in the focus of the preacher.
