    Annotation:

This ship simile as is shown in Book VI of Plato's Republic will be analyzed considering its place within the discussion on whether to trust the city government to philosophers, core theme of the central books of the dialogue. When compared to the other celebrated pictures -sun, line and cave- holding these Platonic pages, the image of the vessel has not received the same attention paid by the tradition of the commentators to the other images. My attempt in this paper is to show the relevance of the image in both the arguments of Books VI and VII of Republic and the Athenian political debate going on in the same years in which Plato was writing his dialogue.
