The influence of Spanish theatre of the Golden Age reached different corners of the imperial territory, one of them the Kingdom of Naples. Here several playwrights succeeded and the courtly theatre developed a lot as a result of the patronage of the viceroys who sponsored the representation of plays. One of these plays is El cuerpo de guardia by Luis Enríquez de Fonseca, a particularly large panegyric which was carried to the stage in 1669 and was published in 1683 in his book Ocios de los estudios. Versos y discursos filológicos. It is an advertising play in which several compliments to the king Charles II, to the regent queen Mariana de Austria (for whom the work was performed) and to the viceroy of Naples can be found. It should be noted, on the other hand, that the main contribution of the text, in addition to serve as propagating model of short theatre, is the reflection on the process of creation, writing and dramatization of a play. In this paper El cuerpo de guardia is edited.
