Pedro Franqueza, Count of Villalonga, the Secretary of King Phillip III of Spain, was detained on January 19, 1607, and kept in prison until his death. Immediately after his detention a satirical poem about him and his arrest began to circulate. This poem, recently discovered in a contemporary manuscript, is an outstanding example of the political ballad of the seventeenth century. This, indeed, is a very little known genre because it was rarely printed and was circulated only in manuscript and, of course, in the oral tradition.
