Like in other cultural periods, the medieval myth of El Cid returns to the pages of contemporary Spanish literature. Through the analysis of four Spanish novels published in the early twenty-first century, this paper aims to examine the cultural reasons which justify cidian myth rewriting in postmodern literature. It also aims to analyze the attributes of the figure of Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar that make it a very attractive plot for contemporary historical fiction and the expression of the so-called "postmodern condition".
