The concept of «vers libre» offers many problems for its definition, its origins and its evolution in Modern and Contemporary Spanish Poetry. This article defines and studies the presence of «vers libre» in French Symbolist Poetry, its connections to Hispanic Modernism and the possible influence on Juan Ramón Jiménez. Some of Jiménez's books of poetry, especially Diario de un poeta reciencasado (1917) are studied here in the light of this definition of «vers libre». After the analysis, the conclusion shows that Jiménez was the first Spanish poet ever to use consciously and willingly «vers libre», and to pave the way for its use in Contemporary Spanish Poetry.
