The aim of this paper is to illustrate an interesting puzzling feature of modern semantics. This paper provides a nice illustration of how Russel's program articulated in the history of modern semantics. K. Donnellan's paper extends Strawson's program, using Strawson's pragmatic approach to defend a deeper penetration of semantics by pragmatics than Strawson himself envisioned. Donnellan distinguishes two classes of uses of definite descriptions distinguished not by syntax but by circunstance. They are only used attributively and referentialy. In disputing the idea that Donnellan's distinction is one of scope, I argue that no merely two-way distinction can handle the multiple amphiboly caused by the interaction of descriptions.
