His first performances in 1917 and 1920 as a composer of four-part piano sonata and some ten solo songs were not very succesful: the critics branded him as a revolutionary, whose ideas were not suitable or acceptable in Finnish cultural life for being too "modern". Diktonius's close friend, a famous left-wing politician Otto Wille Kuusinen was at the time his secret advisor on aesthetical and political matters and private music student. Diktonius published his first collection of poems in 1922, and subsequently concentrated only on poetry. Music meant a lot to him during his whole life - he wrote a vast amount of musical criticism for different newpapers - but presumably he did not compose any more music after his "scandalous success" in 1920. |
