    The aim of this article is to review the history of teaching lexicon to children. In this pursuit some teaching materials used at different times are analysed, that is, methodological approaches, history and means of publication of these dictionaries, especially, between 1787-1920. This will allow us to clearly identify the following features of the history of the practice of lexicography for children: thematic vocabularies or basic dictionaries for children, glossaries, and vocabulary posters specifically addressed to the teaching and learning of vocabulary to children. The teaching resource of this lexicography mainly lies in the combination of image and text, being both elements associated to invite communication. However, visualization appears to be the mechanism of assimilation of greater value, although the educational performance basically includes the knowledge of the word, the concept and the spelling.
