                            [a] => Academic writing and literary writing appear to have little in common. But that is not the case. Both require not only originality and imagination but experience. Both focus on a given object, and that object, whether academic or literary, becomes something desirable, because it is unknown, intellectually and emotionally irresistible. In analogous fashion, to write narrative means to imagine the life of others, while to write an academic text means to imagine or recreate the work or culture of others. Part of the experience needed in order to write literary or cultural criti- cism consists above all in reading. Reading a great deal. That being said, it is not a matter of denying or diminishing the differences between the two kinds of writing, but of exploring what it means to be ambidextrous in the art of writing.
