This essay studies three key features about the life and work of Fernán González de Eslava. The first element is a critical review that dismisses any links between the author and the Jesuit Order. The second element focuses on the origin of the title for which his work is known, Coloquios espirituales y sacramentales (Spiritual and Sacramental Colloquies), which corresponds to the editor and compiler Fernando Vello de Bustamante, since Eslava was never concerned with classifying his theatrical works. The third element suggests a combined analysis of the dramatic texts and historical facts that motivated them, in order to establish a chronology of his sixteen colloquies
