Being widely admitted that in his theological reflection, Maximus worked out in greater detail what is offered in the writings of Denys the Areopagite, which came to the notice of Christian thinkers barely fifty years before Maximu's birth, many of the categories introduced by the author of "De divinis nominibus" can be proven to foreshadow Maximus' contemplation of the cosmic disclosure. A conception of love inherited from Denys, understood as a holy disposition linked to the knowledge of God, is found in Maximus' "Letter 2: On love", as well as in some of the "Ambigua". A detailed explanation of the bounds between love and the fragility of the otherness which creation should have to constitute is undertaken in this paper, in order to demonstrate that, according to Maximus, creation is only an appearance of otherness that longs to regain the primeval unity.
