Russia emerges as the heir, in a sense, of Byzantium, but the model of the traditional imperial idea experiences a profound change upon which the union adopted in the council of Florence, perceived as a betrayal of Orthodoxy, and the imperial model put into place by Mehmed the Conqueror have a decisive influence. The method adopted by the Third Rome to legitimize its imperial role will actually be the same one that Mehmed II applied: the autocratic sovereign should surround himself with the most capable men, chosen freely, not with the hereditary nobility.
