The profound geopolitical transformations brought about by the disappearance of the Byzantine Empire bring with them a complete change of the very concept of the imperial idea in Orthodox mentality, not only in the Greeks themselves, but in the whole Orthodox "oikoumene". Russia emerges as the heir, in a sense, of Byzantium, but the model of the traditional imperial idea experiences a profound change upon which the union adopted in the council of Florence, perceived as a betrayal of Orthodoxy, and the imperial model put into place by Mehmed the Conqueror have a decisive influence. The method adopted by the Third Rome to legitimize its imperial role will actually be the same one that Mehmed II applied: the autocratic sovereign should surround himself with the most capable men, chosen freely, not with the hereditary nobility.
