    In the fourth century the Cappadocian Fathers conceptualised God as one substance and three hypostases. This model then became the basis for orthodox Trinitarian theology. Yet this does not mean that Trinitarian speculation had come to an end. In the sixth century John Philoponus proposed a radically different conceptual framework. Drawing on Aristotelian philosophy, he defined Father, Son and Spirit as three substances. This development had an impact on later Byzantine theology. Two eleventh-century authors, Nicetas Stethatos and Leo of Chalcedon, based their Trinitarian speculation on Aristotle, despite paying lip-service to the teachings of the Cappadocians
