This article examines Islamic bindings and the way some of their main features managed to influence the tradition of Greek post-Byzantine bindings in the centuries after the fall of Constantinople, up to the early 18th century and occasionally far beyond. It also speculates about the possible causes that might have prompted and encouraged this influence, such as the content of a book, the fashion of Greek manuscript illumination of the 17th century, and the practical advantages of the light structure of Islamic bindings. It is interesting to note that the influence of such Islamic elements was not universal in 16th and 17th centuries Greek Orthodox communities, but dependent on factors like the local situation and the degree of conservatism that was prevalent. Thus the influence was very limited in the Sinai Orthodox community, but rather marked on Mt. Athos.
