On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland and England and France, guarantors of the integrity of the polish State, declared war on Germany. One of the measures taken by the nations that took part in the Second World War, was to suppress the marine communications between Greece and the ports of the belligerent nations. Not less interesting are the instructions given by the hellenic executive to the Greek merchant navy to sail the waters of the countries at war. Special mention needs the Law n. 2458, published on July 25, 1940, which prohibited to the military planes of the belligerent nations to fly over the territory and the territorial waters of Hellenic State, in view of his neutrality. Nevertheless, Greece was finally occupied by Germany, Italy and Bulgaria in 1941.
