This article draws up a map of the love discourses present in La margarita del Tajo que dio nombre a Santarén (circa 1622-1640) by the Portuguese playwright Ángela de Azevedo in order to elucidate how the play goes one step further in the critique of the patriarchal order within the Golden Age Spanish theatre. La margarita del Tajo by Angela de Azevedo is a «comedia de santos» that freely recreates the circumstances of the death of Irene de Tancor, a 6th century Portuguese martyr who met tragic death at the hands of the two male characters who were after her affection. From the analysis of the actions and dialogues, I propose that three love discourses are manifested in the comedia -christian love, courtly love, and comic love- which give the female characters different roles (ideal of virtue, object of desire and marginal subject) with varying degrees of agency
