This paper focuses on one of the sources used by Gonzalo de las Casas in the Arte para criar seda (1581). On the basis of a passage of the treatise where Plutarch is explicitly cited, this work contemplates several of the Greek historian's texts. The identification of the source leads to considering diverse expressions about beetle. These are near and far in time to the Arte para criar seda. The main interest lies in beetle's death as a motif that has been explored by Plutarch and other authors in Western culture
