                            [a] => Through the combined reading of the sources -a poetic relation and a notarial document- not only is part of the interior features of the church of the convent of nuns recovered, but the visual culture of New Spain is explored as well. From the observation of the deep connection intertwining different artistic practices, the circulation of certain core ideas of the theory of art prevailing in the 17th century is examined through their assimilation in complex literary forms of artistic appreciation. In the Sagrado padrón (1691) -the booklet celebrating the dedication of the  church, describing the building, and praising the memory of its patron- the prose and the poetry of Alonso Ramírez de Vargas unveil the meanings and the functions of the image in the viceregal culture. Above all, they reveal how art and literature built the presence of hidden nuns behind the walls of the cloister.
