In 1668 Henry Morgan took Porto Belo (Panama). Alexandre Olivier Exquemelin, a contemporary author, claimed that the filibusters used human shields, including friars and nuns, to place the stairs and storm the main fortress of the city. This dishonourable act would seem in line with the moral calibre of the pirates as well as essential, given that the attack was a quick success despite the fortifications that surrounded the city. Therefore, the aim of this work is to test the historicity of such dynamics. For this purpose, we analyse the unpublished documentation of Spanish production, the result of the depositions of eyewitnesses, to examine the side of the story that offered the human shields themselves. Finally, we look for the reasons that, possibly, led the author to twist the real methods of the attack
