In this paper, we focus on the configuration and meaning of a symbol: thewoman who weaves in Ida Vitale's poetry. The Uruguayan author uses myths to get theimage of a woman of wisdom, who rouses to a self-awareness of the world and her ownboundaries by way of her weaving. We will analyze the particular characteristics of the myth.We will concentrate on Ariadne and Penelope. Twentieth Century poetry reconsiders theirhistories from a feminine perspective. The texts chosen explore the consciousness: thesewomen build the/their history by their weaving. Ariadne and Penelope along with othermyths and women will lead us to a "poetic I" that explores similar concepts, as anotherwoman who weaves and knows.
