With a few exceptions, critics have usually avoided or made very slight references to "Quetzalcóatl", Cernuda's long narrativepoem about the Conquest of Mexico, and very often have felt embarrassed or uncomfortable about it apologetic tones and its cynical approach to violence. A close study of the sources that Cernuda handled and the context from which he wrote his poem, as well as the rhetorical devices at work on the text, nevertheless, can be a help to make its meaning more apparent and counteract this embarrassment and this uncomfort.
