This paper analyses Suárez's theory of the origin and legitimation of political power using the notion of common good as an interpretative guide. Humans discover the impossibility of giving it adequate fulfilment within natural communities, so they are impelled to transit naturally towards political ones; although, at the same time, such transit depends on a voluntary act. Thus, for Suárez, nature and social contract are compatible in the explanation of the origin of the political community. On the other hand, though democracy appears as the original and natural form of political organisation, Suárez privileges monarchy as the best form of government to achieve the common good. But, at the same time, the prince is required to legislate and govern following the common good. In case of serious injustice, the community's right of resistance is activated to prevent a greater harm to the common good
